You've scrolled through a hundred nail photos, you know the look you want — and then the salon asks, "Rubber base, gel, polygel or acrylic?" Suddenly you're guessing.

It matters more than it sounds. Pick the wrong system and you could end up with nails that lift after a week, feel too heavy, or damage your natural nails when they come off. Pick the right one and your set looks glossy and strong for weeks.

This guide explains each option in plain language: what it is, who it suits, how long it lasts and what it costs at our Lansdowne salon. By the end, you'll know exactly what to ask for.

The quick answer

If you just want the short version:

  • Choose rubber base if your natural nails are thin, bendy or break easily and you want them to grow.
  • Choose a gel overlay if your nails are healthy and you want a glossy, chip-resistant colour on your natural length.
  • Choose polygel if you want extra length or shape that feels light and natural.
  • Choose acrylic if you want long, strong, dramatic nails that can take a knock.

Still unsure? That's normal. We look at your nails at every appointment and recommend the best option before we start — no pressure, no upselling.

What is rubber base?

Rubber base is a thicker, more flexible gel base coat. Think of it as a cushion between your natural nail and your colour. Because it bends a little with your nail instead of cracking, it's excellent for people whose nails peel, split or snap.

Rubber base also self-levels, which means it smooths out ridges and uneven surfaces. That gives you a sleek finish even if your nails aren't perfect underneath.

Best for: thin, weak or bendy nails; anyone growing out their natural nails; short to medium length.

Not ideal for: very long extensions — for serious length, you'll want tips with polygel or acrylic.

What is a gel overlay?

A gel overlay is a layer of hard gel (or builder gel) applied over your natural nail, then finished with colour and a high-shine top coat. It adds strength without adding length, so your nails stay looking like yours — just better.

Gel is cured under a lamp, so there's no drying time. You walk out with nails that are completely set and ready for real life.

An Xpress gel manicure starts at R200, and with proper prep and good aftercare, most gel manicures last 2–3 weeks. If you want to make yours last as long as possible, read our guide on how long gel nails last and 9 tips to make them last 3 weeks.

Best for: healthy natural nails; a glossy, natural-length manicure; people who want low-maintenance colour.

What is polygel?

Polygel is a hybrid of gel and acrylic. It comes as a putty-like paste that we shape on the nail, then cure under a lamp. It's lighter than acrylic but stronger than regular gel, and it doesn't have the strong smell some people associate with acrylics.

Because it's easy to sculpt, polygel is great for adding length with tips or building a nicer shape on short nails.

Best for: medium length; people who find acrylic too heavy; natural-looking extensions.

What is acrylic?

Acrylic is made by mixing a liquid and a powder, which harden into a very strong layer. It's the classic choice for long, sculpted and statement nails — coffin, stiletto, long square — and for nail art that needs a sturdy base.

Acrylic is the most durable of the four, which makes it popular if you're hard on your hands. The trade-off is that it feels a little thicker, and it needs to be removed properly to protect your natural nail.

Best for: long or dramatic nails; people who are tough on their hands; bold nail art.

What each option costs

Prices are the same for everyone, and they're all published on our price list. Here are the main nail enhancement prices at Marvelous:

How to choose: four honest questions

1. How strong are your natural nails?

If they bend, peel or break, start with rubber base. It gives you strength while your nails recover. If they're already strong, a gel overlay is usually all you need.

2. How much length do you want?

For your natural length, choose rubber base or gel overlay. For extra length, choose tips with polygel, acrylic or soft gel. The longer and more dramatic the shape, the more acrylic makes sense.

3. How hard are you on your hands?

Nurses, moms, gym-goers and anyone who types all day put their nails through a lot. If yours tend to snap, acrylic or polygel will hold up better than a thin overlay.

4. How often can you come back?

All four options need maintenance. Most clients book a fill or new set every 2–3 weeks. A fill with gel reapplication is R250 and keeps everything strong and neat as your nails grow.

Will it damage my natural nails?

This is the question we hear most. The honest answer: the products themselves aren't the main problem. Damage usually comes from three things:

  1. Picking or peeling off gel or acrylic, which rips away layers of your natural nail.
  2. Over-filing during prep or removal.
  3. Leaving a set on too long, so it lifts and traps moisture.

That's why we prep gently, never over-file, and recommend a proper soak-off (R100) instead of forcing old product off.

What great results look like

A great set should look smooth and even from every angle, with a clean cuticle line and no bumps. It should feel comfortable, not heavy or tight. And it should still look glossy after two weeks.

We use professional salon gel polish — including Gel-It and BG Superior — and take our time on prep, because prep is what makes the difference between one week and three.

Frequently asked questions

Is rubber base better than gel?
It isn't better or worse — it's for a different nail. Rubber base is more flexible and ideal for weak, thin nails. A standard gel overlay suits healthy nails that just need colour and shine.
Which lasts longer: polygel or acrylic?
Both usually last 2–3 weeks before you need a fill. Acrylic is slightly more durable for very long nails; polygel feels lighter and more natural.
Can I switch from acrylic to rubber base?
Yes, and many clients do. We soak off your acrylic, gently prep your nails and apply rubber base to protect them while they grow.
Do you do nail art and French tips?
Yes. A French paint add-on is R30, and we can quote for other designs if you send us a photo on WhatsApp.

The bottom line

There's no single "best" nail system — only the best one for your nails and lifestyle. Weak nails? Rubber base. Healthy nails? Gel overlay. Want length? Polygel, acrylic or soft gel tips.
