You want lashes that look done the moment you wake up. No curler, no clumpy mascara, no panda eyes after a long day. The two most popular ways to get there are a lash lift and lash extensions — but they're very different treatments.

One works with the lashes you already have. The other adds new ones. One needs almost no upkeep. The other needs regular fills. This guide will help you choose the one that fits your lashes, your budget and your routine.

What is a lash lift?

A lash lift is like a perm for your eyelashes. We gently lift your natural lashes from the root and set them in a curled shape using a silicone shield and a lifting solution. The result is lashes that look longer and more open — as if you've used a great lash curler, but it lasts for weeks.

Add a lash tint and your lashes also look darker and more defined, especially at the tips. That's why most clients book a Lash Lift & Tint together.

Best for: people with decent natural lash length, low-maintenance lovers, sporty or busy lifestyles, and anyone who wants a natural result.

What are lash extensions?

Lash extensions are individual synthetic lashes attached to your natural lashes, one by one (or as light fans for volume). They add length, thickness and fullness your natural lashes don't have on their own.

You can choose a natural classic set, a textured hybrid set or a full, fluffy volume set. If you're not sure which, our guide to classic vs hybrid vs volume lashes explains the differences.

Best for: people with short or sparse lashes, anyone who wants a noticeable difference, special occasions and lash lovers who enjoy a regular salon routine.

Which one suits your lifestyle?

Choose a lash lift if…

  • You like a natural look and want to "look awake" without mascara
  • You swim, gym or live an active outdoor life
  • You don't want to plan salon fills every few weeks
  • Your natural lashes have reasonable length
  • You rub your eyes a lot or sleep face-down (extensions don't love either)

Choose lash extensions if…

  • Your natural lashes are short, sparse or straight
  • You want visible length and fullness — from natural to full glam
  • You have a wedding, holiday, matric dance or event coming up
  • You enjoy a regular beauty routine and are happy to book fills

A lash lift enhances what you have. Extensions give you what you don't.

What each treatment costs

Both options are clearly priced on our lash service page:

Over time, a lash lift usually works out cheaper because there are no fills. Extensions give a bigger transformation but need regular top-ups to stay full.

What to expect at each appointment

Lash lift & tint

  1. We cleanse your lashes and check for any sensitivity.
  2. A soft silicone shield is placed on each eyelid, sized to your lash length.
  3. Your lashes are gently lifted onto the shield and the lifting solution is applied.
  4. If you've booked a tint, we tint your lashes for extra definition.
  5. We remove everything, brush your lashes into shape and you're done.

Your eyes stay closed the whole time, and most people find it relaxing.

Lash extensions

  1. We discuss the look you want and map the set to your eye shape.
  2. Under-eye pads are placed to keep your lower lashes separate.
  3. Extensions are applied one natural lash at a time.
  4. You check your new lashes in the mirror and we go through aftercare.

Aftercare for both

The first 24 hours

  • Keep your lashes dry — no steam, sauna or swimming
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes
  • Skip eye make-up and oil-based products around the eyes
  • Sleep on your back if you can

After that:

  • Lash lift: you can use mascara if you like, though many people don't need it. A lash serum or conditioner can help keep lashes healthy.
  • Extensions: skip mascara, avoid oil-based cleansers, brush gently every morning and book your fill every 2–3 weeks.

Can you have both?

Not at the same time on the same lashes — extensions need straight natural lashes to attach to properly, and a lift changes that curl. But you can switch between them. Many clients wear extensions for a special season, then give their lashes a break with a lift and tint.

And don't forget your brows: a lash lift paired with a brow tint or lamination is a lovely, low-maintenance combo. Our guide to brow lamination, henna and tinting explains your options.

Lash myths, busted

"Lash lifts make your lashes fall out."

A lash lift works on your existing lashes and doesn't add weight to them. Lashes shed naturally every day, lift or no lift. What matters is that the treatment is timed correctly for your lash type and not repeated too often.

"Extensions ruin your natural lashes."

Extensions that are too heavy, glued together or pulled off at home can cause problems. Extensions that are matched to your natural lashes and applied one by one shouldn't. It's all about the technique and your aftercare.

"You can't wear make-up with either."

After the first 24 hours, you can wear eye make-up with a lash lift. With extensions, you can still wear eyeshadow and eyeliner — just skip mascara and oil-based removers.

"A lift won't do anything for straight lashes."

Actually, straight lashes are often where a lift makes the biggest visible difference, because the curl opens up your eyes. The main limitation is very short lashes, where the effect is more subtle.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a lash lift last?
Usually around 6–8 weeks, as your natural lashes grow and shed.
Does a lash lift damage your lashes?
When done correctly, with the right timing and gentle products, a lash lift is safe for healthy lashes. We don't recommend repeating it too often.
Can I get a lash lift if I have short lashes?
Yes, though the effect is more subtle on very short lashes. If yours are very short or sparse, extensions may give you the look you want.
What's cheaper in the long run?
A lash lift, because there are no fills. A lift and tint is R300 at Marvelous.

The bottom line

If you want easy, natural lashes with almost no upkeep, book a lash lift and tint. If you want length and fullness your natural lashes can't give you, book lash extensions.
