Classic vs Hybrid vs Volume Lashes: How to Choose the Right Set
Classic, hybrid or volume lash extensions? How each set looks, what it costs, how long it lasts and how to choose the right one for your eyes and lifestyle.

In this article
You've decided to try lash extensions. Then you see the menu: Classic, Hybrid, Volume. Which one gives you the look you want — without looking "too much" or "not enough"?
It's a common worry, and it's why many first-timers either play it too safe or go too dramatic. This guide explains the difference between the three sets in plain language, so you can walk into your appointment knowing exactly what to ask for.
The short version
- Classic lashes look like your own lashes with great mascara. Natural, defined, polished.
- Volume lashes look full, soft and fluffy. Glamorous, noticeable, "wow".
- Hybrid lashes sit in between — a mix of both for texture and fullness without full drama.
Everything else — curl, length and how the set is "mapped" to your eye shape — can be tailored for you, whichever set you choose.
What are classic lashes?
With a classic set, we attach one extension to one natural lash. The result looks like your own lashes, only longer, darker and more defined.
Classic lashes are a great first set. They're lightweight, look natural in daylight and suit almost everyone. They work especially well if you already have a good number of natural lashes and want to skip mascara, not transform your look.
Best for: first-timers, natural make-up lovers, work and everyday wear, people with plenty of natural lashes.
Keep in mind: if your natural lashes are sparse, a classic set will look natural but not very full, because it can only add as many extensions as you have lashes.
What are volume lashes?
With volume lashes, we create small, ultra-light fans of several fine extensions and attach each fan to one natural lash. Because the extensions are so fine, you get lots of fullness without extra weight on your natural lashes.
Volume sets look soft, fluffy and full. They fill gaps beautifully, so they're a great choice if your natural lashes are sparse or you love a glam look.
Best for: fuller, glam looks; sparse natural lashes; events, weddings and photos; people who love a statement.

What are hybrid lashes?
A hybrid set combines classic single lashes and volume fans. The mix adds texture and softness, and fills in gaps while keeping some of the natural, wispy definition of a classic set.
Hybrid is a popular choice if classic feels too subtle but full volume feels like too much. It's also great for creating a wispy, textured effect.
Best for: people who want "more than natural" but not full glam, wispy looks, and anyone who can't decide.

How much do lash extensions cost?
Here are our current lash prices. A fill tops up your set as your natural lashes shed, so you don't need a full new set every time.
How to choose: five questions to ask yourself
1. How much make-up do you usually wear?
If you mostly wear light make-up or none at all, classic will look the most natural. If you love a full face and lashes, volume will feel right at home.
2. What are your natural lashes like?
Lots of healthy natural lashes? Classic will look beautiful. Sparse lashes or gaps? Hybrid or volume will fill them in far better.
3. Is this for everyday or a special event?
For a wedding, matric dance or holiday photos, many clients choose hybrid or volume. For day-to-day work life, classic or a soft hybrid is often easier to live with.
4. Is this your first set?
Many first-timers start with classic or hybrid to get used to the feeling. You can always go fuller at your next fill.
5. What's your budget for upkeep?
All three need regular fills to stay looking full. Plan for a fill every 2–3 weeks. If you'd rather avoid upkeep altogether, a lash lift might suit you better — see our guide to lash lift vs lash extensions.
What happens at your lash appointment
- Consultation. We chat about the look you want and check your natural lashes, eye shape and any sensitivities.
- Get comfortable. You lie back with under-eye pads in place. Most clients close their eyes and relax — some even fall asleep.
- Application. Extensions are applied carefully, one natural lash at a time, so your lashes stay healthy.
- Reveal and aftercare. You check your new lashes and we explain how to keep them looking full.
How long do lash extensions last?
Extensions are attached to your natural lashes, which shed naturally every day. As they fall out, the extensions go with them. That's why most clients book a fill every 2–3 weeks.
To help your set last:
- Keep lashes dry for the first 24 hours
- Avoid oil-based cleansers and make-up removers around the eyes
- Skip mascara — especially waterproof mascara
- Brush your lashes gently each morning with a clean spoolie
- Try not to sleep face-down in your pillow
- Never pull or pick at extensions
Do lash extensions damage your natural lashes?
When they're applied properly — the right weight for your natural lashes, and never stuck together — extensions shouldn't damage your lashes. Problems usually come from extensions that are too heavy, lashes glued together, or pulling extensions off at home.
That's why we match each set to your natural lashes and apply them one by one. If you ever want them removed, message us rather than pulling them off.

Lash shapes: finding your style
Beyond classic, hybrid or volume, the shape of your set makes a big difference. We map every set to your eye shape, but here are the popular styles to mention when you book:
- Natural — lengths follow your own lashes for a soft, balanced look.
- Cat eye — longer lashes towards the outer corners for a lifted, flicked effect.
- Open eye (doll) — the longest lashes sit in the centre to make eyes look rounder and more open.
- Wispy — spikier, varied lengths for a textured, fluttery finish, often done with a hybrid set.
Not sure? Save a few photos you love and send them to us. We'll tell you honestly which style will suit your eye shape.
Frequently asked questions
- Which lash set looks the most natural?
- Classic lashes look the most natural — like your own lashes with good mascara.
- Are volume lashes heavy?
- No. Volume fans are made from very fine extensions, so they add fullness without extra weight when applied correctly.
- How often do I need a lash fill?
- Every 2–3 weeks for most clients. A fill at Marvelous is R250.
- Can I wear mascara with extensions?
- It's best not to. Mascara is hard to remove from extensions and can shorten the life of your set.
The bottom line
There's no wrong choice — only the set that's right for your lashes and your life. Want natural? Go classic. Want full glam? Go volume. Somewhere in between? Hybrid is your friend.
