Knotless braids have become one of the most-requested protective styles — and for good reason. They look neat and natural from the root, feel lighter than traditional box braids and are gentler on your scalp.

But before you book, you probably have questions. How long will you be in the chair? How long will they last? Is hair included? And how do you keep them looking fresh without damaging your edges?

Here's everything you need to know.

What are knotless braids?

Traditional box braids start with a small knot of extension hair tied at the root. Knotless braids skip the knot. Instead, the braid starts with your own hair, and extension hair is gradually fed in as the braid grows.

That small difference has big benefits:

  • Less tension on your scalp and edges, especially in the first few days
  • A flatter, more natural look at the root
  • Lighter and more flexible — easier to put up in a ponytail or bun sooner
  • More comfortable to sleep on

How long do knotless braids take?

Honestly, it depends. Knotless braids take several hours — often somewhere between four and eight hours, sometimes longer. The main factors are:

  • Braid size. Small braids take much longer than medium or large (jumbo) braids.
  • Length. Waist-length braids take longer than shoulder-length or bob braids.
  • Your hair. Thickness, length and how your hair is prepped all play a part.

When you send us a photo of the style you want, we'll give you a realistic time estimate so you can plan your day.

How long do knotless braids last?

With good care, most knotless braids look neat for about 4–6 weeks. Some people keep them a little longer, but leaving braids in too long can lead to:

  • Build-up and matting at the roots
  • Breakage when the new growth tangles
  • Extra stress on your edges and hairline

Around the six-week mark, it's usually time to take them out and give your hair and scalp some care.

What do knotless braids cost?

Here are our braiding prices. Braids are shown as "from", because the final price depends on the size, length and style you choose, and whether hair fibre is included.

How to prepare for your braiding appointment

Before you come in

  • Wash and deep-condition your hair a day or two before
  • Detangle thoroughly and make sure your hair is completely dry
  • Skip heavy oils and butters on the day, so sections stay neat
  • Buy your hair fibre if it isn't included in your quote
  • Plan your day around a long appointment

If your hair needs some extra love first, a hair treatment or wash & blow before braiding can help. Just ask when you book.

What happens at your appointment

  1. Style check. We confirm the size, length, parting and any details, like curly ends or beads.
  2. Prep. Your hair is detangled and neatly sectioned.
  3. Braiding. Each braid starts with your own hair, with extension hair fed in gradually. We keep the tension comfortable — please tell us if anything feels too tight.
  4. Finishing. Ends are sealed and the style is set so it stays neat.

Braids should never hurt. Tight isn't the same as neat — and your edges will thank you for speaking up.

How to care for knotless braids

Protect your braids at night

Sleep with a satin or silk scarf or bonnet, or on a satin pillowcase. It reduces friction, frizz and lint.

Keep your scalp clean and comfortable

Your scalp still needs care. Every week or two, cleanse gently with a diluted shampoo or scalp cleanser, focusing on the scalp rather than scrubbing the braids. Rinse well and make sure your braids dry completely.

Moisturise lightly

Use a light leave-in spray or scalp oil a few times a week. Avoid heavy products that cause build-up.

Go easy on up-dos at first

Knotless braids can be styled sooner than traditional box braids, but give your scalp a few days before tight ponytails or buns.

Refresh your edges gently

Frizz around the hairline is normal after a few weeks. Smooth it lightly with a soft brush and a little edge control — but don't over-brush or pull.

Knotless braid care checklist

  • Satin scarf or bonnet every night
  • Gentle scalp cleanse every 1–2 weeks
  • Light moisture a few times a week
  • No tight up-dos for the first few days
  • Take them out at around 4–6 weeks

Taking your braids out

Removal needs patience. Rushing it is one of the most common causes of breakage. Work slowly, detangle each section as it's released and follow with a wash, deep condition and a trim if needed.

Don't have the time or patience? We offer cornrow removal (R100) and cornrow & braid removal (R200), so your natural hair is handled gently.

Choosing your size and length

Not sure what size or length to go for? A few things to think about:

  • Small braids look delicate and last well, but take the longest to install and remove.
  • Medium braids are the most popular balance of time, weight and versatility.
  • Large or jumbo braids are quicker to install and bold, but may not last quite as long.
  • Shoulder-length or bob styles are lighter and easier to manage day to day.
  • Mid-back or waist length is dramatic and beautiful, but heavier — and needs more hair fibre.

If it's your first time with knotless braids, medium size at shoulder to mid-back length is a comfortable, versatile place to start.

Knotless vs other braid styles

  • Normal braids start with a knot at the root. They're classic and long-lasting, but can feel tighter at first.
  • Bob braids are shorter, lighter and quicker — great for a chic, low-maintenance look.
  • Long braids give you length and drama, but take longer and need more hair fibre.
  • Cornrows are braided flat to the scalp, either as a style on their own or under a wig.
